A major technological offensive has been launched by the Punjab Police against organised crime with the deployment of the Punjab Artificial Intelligence System (PAIS). The AI-powered platform has been designed to track and dismantle gangster networks operating both locally and from foreign soil.
Under the state government’s ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ campaign, the Punjab Police developed a specialised Voice Recognition System within PAIS that features a comprehensive “Voice Bank” containing more than 84,000 samples of known criminals and suspects. This allows authorities to identify individuals involved in extortion and criminal threats within minutes.

As per sources, PAIS houses a massive criminal database of more than 3,90,000 offenders. The system includes a ‘Gang Tree Search’ tool that enables investigators to map out the hierarchy of crime syndicates and link local executors to international handlers based in countries like Canada, the United States, and Italy.
At present, about 60 notorious gangsters are estimated to be operating from abroad, using encrypted applications and virtual numbers to coordinate crimes in Punjab.
Promod Ban, ADGP, Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), said the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has shifted the department’s approach from reactive to predictive policing. He highlighted that recent operations have successfully thwarted targeted killings by tracking digital communications and identifying threats before they are executed.
Currently, the AGTF’s Fugitive Tracking Cells are leveraging PAIS intelligence to coordinate more effectively with international agencies, including Interpol, for the extradition of overseas-based fugitives.
The state government has emphasised that this move reinforces its zero-tolerance policy toward organised crime and aims to dismantle the entire ecosystem of funding and coordination that supports gang activity in the state.
